Hello Railway Team,
My name is Ouga Jean Stephane, a developer from Côte d’Ivoire. I am writing to you today to highlight a significant growth opportunity for Railway across the entire African continent.
Currently, Railway's billing system mainly accepts traditional credit cards. However, in most African countries, the credit system is not the standard. Instead, the tech ecosystem—from students to fast-growing startups—relies almost exclusively on prepaid Visa/Mastercard debit cards.
Because these cards are often declined by your current provider, thousands of talented African developers are unable to use Railway and are forced to look for alternatives.
My Suggestion: A Hybrid Billing System
To mitigate the risk of failed payments while opening up to this massive market, Railway could implement an automatic dual-flow system:
- Standard Flow (Credit Cards): Keep the current post-usage billing.
- Top-up Flow (Prepaid Cards): For users with prepaid cards, switch them to a "Prepaid Balance" mode. Users deposit a balance (e.g., $10, $20) onto their account. Resources are deducted from this balance in real-time. If the balance reaches zero, the service simply pauses.
Why this matters:
- Market Expansion: Africa has the fastest-growing developer population in the world. Being the first "prepaid-friendly" modern PaaS would make Railway the #1 choice on the continent.
- Financial Inclusion: It removes the banking barrier for developers in markets like Côte d'Ivoire, Nigeria, Kenya, and Senegal.
- Zero Risk: The top-up model ensures Railway never provides resources without prior payment.
I would love to see Railway become the go-to platform for the next generation of African tech giants.
Best regards,
Ouga Jean Stephane
