The EU-US Privacy shield was invalidated on 16, July 2020.
Hence, US cloud servers don't comply with GDPR & EU Privacy Laws anymore

maybe this should be renamed to "More Deployment Regions" as "Multi-Region" could mean like a deployment can be deployed in multiple regions (also if static deployment ips gets implemented we could also get anycast too for multi-region routing)

There appear to be different opinions of what "Multi Region Support" encompasses:
(1) being able to select/switch from a single deployment region to another
(2) Deploying possibly several redundant/replica (read-only or read/write ACID) instances at the edge across the globe
On the infrastructure level, (2) requires (1) since the support for deploying the same project in different regions has to be present first. I came here to voice my support for (2) as the ideal end-goal, with the ability to choose between configurations of both (1) and (2). I just started dabbling around with Railway, but I think having the option to pay up for edge deployments of (parts of) an entire projects environment, with configurable global instance distribution, would make Railway a go-to for simple fast deploys. Something like a competitor to Lambda@Edge (AWS, functions only), Workers (Cloudflare, limited KV database) or fly.io (no auto-scaling/fixed VM prices) with the already nice DX, GitHub integration etc. that made me try Railway :)

I've split out these into two different tickets and renamed the above
This ticket encompasses the rollout of other regions, but a singular deployment
I've created another ticket under "Replicas" for both horizontal scaling and multi region deploys

Angelo Saraceno: In AWS terms: eu-west-2; eu-west-1.
UK and EU specifically. While a lot of crossover between EU and UK still exists, more important than ever to be able to segregate hosting between the two jurisdictions.
We can't use Railway for larger commercial, NGO and Gov use cases without the separation.

Berk Sümbül: Idea here is that we can test and validate our EU-MEA regions and add additional locations when we can prove out demand.

After tabulating all the comments from here and in customer interviews, Ireland was picked because of its proximity to US-East as many of our customers have vendor relationships with services based there.

I know y'all are tired of updates without features (just asked the team if we can share some internal demos haha) but from the last update to today, we just shipped the edge network that will enable us to proxy requests to different regions. (Wildcards!)

Going to push back the ETA to June (end of Q2 but rather underpromise and overdeliver on date….)

Angelo Saraceno: What do you mean by "Proxy requests to different regions.", if I may ask? The primarily reason for me to have an EU location as well is to better justify using the service according to the GDPR, here in the EU.

Alexander Matzen: note that the hosting region doesn't affect GDPR compliance. If you're relying on an US-based company the location of the servers doesn't matter as far as GDPR goes.

Matteo: It's not so simplified, hence why the Schrems II issue has not yet been resolved.

The physical location of data storage and data processing can have an effect on the compliance level with the GDPR. Not said that changing to EU servers automatically ensures GDPR compliance nor said that US servers can't be complaint to GDPR.

It's all about risk assessment and management, and what you can do to implement adequate data protection when transferring personal data to third countries.

Can we have Tokyo or Seoul region for Asia? Average latency from Korea and Japan to Singapore is usually over ~150ms, which is considerably high.

finn: That is a very good idea. Since 60% of the earth's population lives in Asia, one of the Japan, Korea, or Singapore servers is essential for fast service deployment!

ETA?

Iskander Iskakov: New ETA might be August (from blog post here: https://blog.railway.app/p/introducing-trial-hobby-pro-plans). I might be confusing multiple region-related features though. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

ETA?

Lukas Gjetting: Why does this keep getting pushed back so many times? Is it because it's very complex or because more important tasks are being worked on?

It makes it very hard to plan when the most requested feature on Railway keeps getting pushed back each month for over a year.

I think multiple region is very important. Can’t wait to move my resour To railway. Hope it will be done soon

This is a MUST. We'd love to deploy our CMS on Railway. Latency on content uploads going all the way to the US is just not feasable.

It would be epic if we can deploy to a multple regions and horizontal scale different regions i.e. more traffic in west-us vs eu so scale west us to 3.

Just updated this with an expected ETA. Timelines shouldn't be taken as gospel but guidance. Early tests and demos looking good.

Looking at Ireland for EU and Singapore for APAC. Nothing final yet.

Angelo Saraceno: Amazing since nearly all data centers default to US-east :) massive for vercel pairing

Update: we now have finalized our planned locations. It's going to be Singapore (APAC), Netherlands (EU), and New Jersey (US-East). We have deployed resources to staging and are currently undergoing testing before launch.

Edit: Ashburn, VA

Angelo Saraceno: awesome!! I am in the Netherlands and I have been waiting for Europe servers for a while. Happy to hear that they are added in the Netherlands!

Angelo Saraceno: coooool.

The doc says you have to set a service variable. Should that be done in the "shared variables" tab in the project?

On the other hand, how can we be notified when the beta is finished?

Hi there! Will this ever be available for Hobby plan users? At first it looked like that, but that it was only available for beta users, but now when I go to my service settings, it says it's only for Pro or Team plans.

it was only ever available for Pro, just at one time it was beta + pro.

there have been talks about giving hobby users an option to pick a single region for all deployments but that would only come after pro gets multiple regions per deployment. but that's not been officially confirmed

Oh :( Well, picking a single region would be more than enough for me. Hope it gets done someday :)

May I ask what your use case for a different region would be?

In my case, my frontend is deployed to Vercel, and region is Europe (Paris, IIRC) because most of the website's target audience is in Spain. Having the backend closer might help a bit with Google Core Web Vitals, or at least I hope. Communication with Strapi is a bit slow than I'd like it to.

I'm archiving this because it's a feature that is live, and any further discussions on it should be in their dedicated threads.

Hey! Please hop over to Regions for Hobby plan users to discuss this.
