You should be fine to use the code now, given you have not yet signed up for a paid plan.

Uhhh... maybe a bit of a silly follow up question, but how exactly do I add it?
In account settings under referrals, I do not see any options of adding my friend's referral code.
Or is opening the referral link enough to associate my account with his referral code?
(or did you mean I should delete my account and make a new one using his referral link?)

The referral code is just a query parameter on the URL, so you just have to sign up while maintaining that query parameter in your URL.

- sign up again, but this time using the referral link sent by my friend
