i just added 3 new env variables and got this error repeatedly 4 times now,
would anyone kindly let me know what happened? if anyone encountered the same and had a fix?

The new environment variables are not what broke the build. Your build logs show it failing at the very start, while downloading the mise build tool from GitHub's release servers. GitHub answered with a 504 Gateway Timeout, and the download failed again on each retry.
The error itself marks this as a temporary fetch failure, and it happens before any of your code or variables are used. Redeploying once the GitHub download goes through again will run the build with your new variables unchanged.

i have faced same failure and it seems like github has been blocking the fetch url replying 504. when i try to download links they work.
