A public-facing service that's been working for ~3 months without issue has started to return a Cloudflare error page: "Invalid SSL certificate Error code 526".

Redeploying the service did not resolve.

Hey there, I have raised this to the networking team for investigation.

Update, we finally got to the root of it. Turns out we had a backpressured queue of 19,000 domains to renew that was making the network service mad. We have shipped a fix, you can get a new cert by adding or removing the domain or waiting till our queue starts working through those domains once again.

Can you please post updates on this fairly large outage to https://railway.instatus.com ? It's been 16 hours, which is honestly way too long for thousands of sites to be unavailable without public acknowledgement.

...taking a step back here, fully breaking 19k+ domains for a whole day (unless we ship DNS changes) is a hair on fire situation. The response here is unbelievably tepid for an infrastructure provider. I've been building on railway (both personal and professional) for 3+ years, and we keep waiting for the Railway team to get professional about platform stability, transparency, and understanding what matters to users.

On the convenience vs reliability curve, the other PaaS tools are getting more convenient, while Railway is failing to get reliable. How do you think this is going to work out?

Hi there,

Your certificate has been renewed, and will automatically be renewed in the future. We've confirmed that the issue you described has been resolved.

To clarify, the backlog described by Angelo related to upcoming certificate renewals, as Railway renews certificates well in advance of the expiry date. In a small subset of cases, the renewal didn't succeed in a timely fashion, and that's what impacted you. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Regards,

Christian
