Custom domain failing to resolve

Overnight (UTC) our custom domain stopped resolving.

I came to the settings and found a message about "completing setup" for the custom domain. (Has been working for years)

There was a purple lightning bolt and I clicked it, several minutes later we seem to be back.

Can someone detail what happened and why?

There seemed to be two issues at the same time. One was that the application was silently failing and rebooting on a bit of code that had run continuously for years but suddenly broke ?!

But there have been certificate issues too so I think lets encrypt may have been having problems.
