Custom domain without using the Custom Domain setting

So I have a custom domain set up as *.[boxlayer.xyz](boxlayer.xyz), if I point a CNAME record of another domain to that specific domain it will always return 404 not found.

Example: turret.[boxlayer.xyz](boxlayer.xyz), domain: [turret.run](turret.run)

Im guessing I will just have to setup a custom domain for every instance of that, but just making sure if I could achive it in a different way
