Hi Railway team,
I migrated my Postgres database to a new region and the database appears to have been reset. After the migration, all application data was gone.
Timeline:
- Migrated the database to a new region.
- Noticed the database/application data was missing.
- Tried using the restore option in the Railway dashboard.
- The restore completed, but the data was still not recovered.
I’m on the Hobby plan, and I’m not sure what recovery options are available, but this was unexpected. Could you please check whether the previous volume, backup, or any recoverable snapshot still exists and help restore the data if possible?
Thanks,
Yash

I ended up recreating the data since it was a hobby project, but its insane that someone could just lose their data after migrating regions

We looked into this. Your database was migrated from us-west2 to asia-southeast1, and the migration removed the original volume in the old region as part of the move, which is why the data was gone afterward. The dashboard restore option restores from backups, and there were no saved backups on this volume to recover from, so it came back empty. We're checking whether any underlying snapshot from the old region still exists, but given the migration completed over a day ago the chances of recovery are low. We're genuinely sorry for the disruption. To protect against this going forward you can enable scheduled volume backups on the service, and we're reviewing the migration flow so a successful move can't leave a database empty like this.

Thanks for the follow-up, and again, sorry this happened. Since you have already recreated the data, there is nothing else we need from you right now.
We have not found a recoverable user backup for that old volume, and the earlier restore completed empty because there were no saved backups to restore from. We are still treating the migration behavior itself as something to review so a region move cannot silently leave a database empty like this. For future database work, please enable scheduled volume backups before migrations or major maintenance so there is an independent recovery point.

I understand that I should have created a volume backup but I was on the hobby plan and a warning that the migration might delete the data. Since I'm on a hobby plan, backups are not available. Please "upgrade to the pro plan or something of that sort" before actually migrating might be worth adding. In my case, the data was not important but I assume someone else might be caught off guard if this happens (even on a hobby plan). Thanks for checking
