My DNS provider will now allow for my root domain to use a CNAME as its main point. I need to use an A record. However, I am able to do www.mydomain.com to the project, just a non www will not work. Is there any workaround on this that is cost effective?

Hello,
You can use Cloudflare's nameservers as they allow root CNAMES.
I figured a temporary workaround out. I created a 301 redirect from the apex to www.
