DNS A Record or CNAME record please help!

I am trying to set up mydomain.com on DNS Made Easy and am confused with the instructions.

I have

  • an A Record for the apex domain mydomain.com pointed to an old ip address

  • an A Record for "www" pointed to the old ip address as well

I deleted www.mydomain.com. A xx.xxx.xxx.xxx

Then I added www.mydomain.com CNAME asdf1234.up.railway.app.

This seemed to be okay.

However it seems like I cannot set up an A record for the apex domain and point it to a railway provided ip address. Is this true?

However, I also cannot set up a CNAME record for the apex domain as I suppose this is just (definitionally) impossible(?).

Is the safest and most straightforward path ahead to simply migrate to Cloudflare from DNS Made Easy?

IIRC you should not be using an A record to map your domain to your service. You should map your service's public URL to your domain as a CNAME record.

I have not used DNS Made Easy before but i can tell you that Cloudflare is pretty easy and straightforward to use as a DNS provider.

I was transferred over to Cloudflare a couple hours ago! Less painful than I realized it would be

Did you get the CNAME records for your deployment working?

No not yet, I just moved everything over to Cloudflare without any changes yet to our legacy infra/app. Will cut the release for railway later today after our traffic drops
