Do Railway Root Domains Really Don't work without Cloudflare?

I'm trying to map my apex root domain as well as my www-subdomain to the same server, but my registrar (Squarespace) rightly refuses to set @ to a CNAME because it's against the specifications (RFC 1034/1035).

I've done some research and everything points to setting up Cloudflare for CNAME-flattening.

I am sure many have tried to host a root/apex domain on Railway? I know Cloudflare works, but it feels there must be more elegant way to host root/apex domains on Railway without having to rely on yet another third party?

Or isn't there?

Correct. Use Cloudflare.

And Railway doesn't manage DNS records, Squarespace does.
