I used go daddy to buy a domain for this website but on railway it asks me to use a CNAME record with the name @ which isn't allowed on go daddy and they say it needs to be a A record.

GoDaddy does not support CNAME flattening or ALIAS records at the root domain, so there is no way to point the apex (@) at Railway while DNS is managed there. You have two options: use a subdomain like www instead, which accepts a standard CNAME, or move your domain's nameservers to a provider that supports flattening (Cloudflare is the most common choice, and the free tier works). Both paths are covered in our root domain guide.
