I don't think so...

And even if you could, you would need to expose your API keys used to access that image.

It's a relatively recent feature, I think at the time pepper said no, it wasn't supported.

You're looking at the correct docs. Templates now support private Docker images, including from GHCR. The private Docker images in templates documentation is current, and your registry credentials are encrypted and hidden from users who deploy the template.
