My free trial expired and i'm planning to upgrade to hobby to continue my usage since its for our studies. I input in my card info which it declined saying "prepaid cards are not allowed" or something along those lines and yet i still got billed for a dollar.

The dollar is a check that Railway does to make sure the card is usable, it's to prevent abuse, don't worry it gets refunded immediately after and you should see the dollar back in a few days if it's not back already

Prepaid cards aren't allowed on Railway since it contradicts Railway's payment model, allowing prepaid cards would make it far too easy for people to scam Railway out of a lot of usage by racking up a ton of bills and then just disappearing

ohh i see

in the technical sense, we support more than credit cards, for example, I use a Visa Debit card with Railway, there is no credit involved with that card, money comes directly from the checking account not from credit.

we support any standard non-prepaid card that can be used to make online purchases, that also support reoccurring payments.

Maybe Railway likes Visa Debit Card rather than MasterCard?

I don't know how it works to be honest

MasterCard works, as long as it is not a pre-paid mastercard

Might be something else then with the OP

Anyway I would try with a credit card just to be safe, if possible

they said their error told them pre-paid cards are not allowed

he says here that he tried debit card

Nope, it said my card doesnt support that kind of purchase

was it just a debit card? debit cards alone do not support online purchases, at least that's how it works where I live

It works with other online purchases though

then it's probably the monthly subscription thing that the card doesn't support

It worked now I used my dads card, how does the billing work ? Does it automatically renew the plan monthly ?

Yes, the plan gets renewed monthly

in essence you pay 5 usd for the plan and then also for any usage you incurred during the month (though the first 5 usd of usage is free with the hobby plan), so at the end of the month you pay for the next month's 5 usd usage and the usage you incurred in the past month

What do you mean by this part "and the usage you incurred in the past month" is there another payment aside from the 5usd I paid for the plan ?

yea, i'll explain it this way

on Railway your application can use different resources like CPU, Ram, Network Egress, and Disk and you pay for what your application uses according to the pricing on Railway's pricing page. Meaning if you use 8 usd of RAM and 4 usd of CPU then you pay 12 usd.

You can consider the 5 usd you paid as the minimum cost, meaning if you only use 3 usd in resources you still pay 5 usd, but if you use 8 usd in resources then you pay 8 usd. The reason you can view it this way is because you paid for Hobby plan which costs 5 usd, but that plan itself includes 5 usd of free resource usage. So essentially it's the same as what I described above

Ohh I understand you meant that if I exceed the amount of resources that my plan provides i'll have to pay to pay for that

Yes, if your usage goes above $5, you'll pay for that.

If your usage is less than 5$ then you'll pay the base price which is 5$

usage = resource usage (CPU, RAM, Disk)
