Hello — two questions about a production MySQL service (project: vanishing-victory, service: MySQL, environment: production).
-
What would an HA MySQL cluster cost per month at our size? The volume is 992 MB used of a 10 GB allocation, in us-west2, with daily/weekly/monthly backups running 28–160 MB each.
-
Can point-in-time restore be enabled on a single-instance service, or does it require converting to an HA cluster? mysqlPitrRestorableWindow reports nothing for this service, and the only enable mutation I can see is enablePitrForHaCluster, which suggests conversion is required — I'd like to confirm that before planning around it.
The reason I'm asking: as things stand, restoring a backup mounts it onto the running service in place of the live volume, so my only in-platform recovery option is one that overwrites production. volumeInstancePITRRestore accepts a newServiceName, which would solve that — if it requires the HA conversion, that's the answer I'm after.
Thanks,

PITR does not require an HA conversion. It works on single-node MySQL and is enabled from the service's Backups tab in the dashboard (see Point-in-Time Recovery). Once enabled, the image switches to the archiving variant at the same version, takes a base backup, and begins shipping binlogs continuously, giving you a 7-day restore window with one-second granularity. A restore provisions a brand-new sibling service with its own volume, replaying the archive to your chosen timestamp, and the source service is never touched, so you get exactly the non-destructive recovery path you are after.
For HA pricing, a default 3-node cluster (primary + 2 replicas) plus 2 HAProxy instances would multiply the running resource consumption accordingly. Published rates are RAM $10/GB/month, CPU $20/vCPU/month, and volume storage $0.15/GB/month, all metered per minute on actual usage. The exact monthly figure depends on what each node actually consumes, so the pricing page and your workspace's usage dashboard are the best way to project it. PITR itself adds bucket storage at the standard rate plus network egress for the uploads, both on compressed data.
