IP addresses? There shouldn't be any IP addresses involved in configuring a custom domain, only a CNAME with a domain-value

That's not quite right, what domain name service is that? My theory is that it doesn't natively support root level CNAMEs and so it defaulted over to using an A record instead, which doesn't work with Railway
