Just running n8n without it being active is costing more than the plan?

Hello,

Im just wondering if i understand this correctly, right now im running n8n on my hobby plan and checking the dashboard it's using 0.538 GB in memory in idle (the worker) and i have no webhooks listening or nothing, according to my calculations that means: Memory: 0.538 GB × $0.00000386 × 2,592,000 sec (1 month) = $5.38/month?

And that's just in idle...? and in total just in idle that would cost around $7 just in idle with everyhting?

Memory
$0.00000386 per GB / sec

CPU

$0.00000772 per vCPU / sec

Volumes

$0.00000006 per GB / sec

Egress

$0.05 per GB

is this correct?

Hey there!
If your services metrics do display those during idle your calculations seem correct.

I wish I was more familiar with N8N so forgive me if Im speaking of something that doesnt exist.
But is there a chance that you have some sort of scheduled/reoccurring/polling task happening? That could incur more resources and as a result spike your cost.

If you're able to show metrics I'd be happy to confirm but in the end this does seem like it will cost that much yes.

Hey thanks for your comment error, okey that sucks for me, i wonder how much it will cost once it's in production then if this is just idle?

Your calculation is correct, but there's good news about the Hobby plan structure.Looking at your situation, you're absolutely right with your math. Let me break down what's actually happening with your n8n deployment and the associated costs.Your Current Situation:You're seeing 0.538 GB of memory usage in idle state, and based on Railway's current pricing structure:Memory: $10/GB/month (or $0.000231/GB/minute)CPU: $20/vCPU/month (or $0.000463/vCPU/minute)So your calculation of roughly $5.38/month for memory alone at idle is mathematically sound. The Hobby Plan AdvantageHere's where it gets better though. The Hobby plan includes $5 of resource usage per month. If your total resource usage at the end of your billing period is $5 or less, you will not be charged for resource usage. If your total resource usage exceeds $5 in any given billing period, you will be charged the delta (more info here: https://docs.railway.com/reference/pricing/plans)What this means for you:You pay $5/month for the Hobby subscription regardlessIf your total resource usage is less than $5, you only pay the $5 subscription feeIf your usage exceeds $5, you pay the subscription fee + the overageWhy n8n Uses Memory at Idle (If you are having doubts about this)n8n needs to:Keep the Node.js runtime loaded in memoryMaintain database connectionsRun the web interface/API serverHandle potential webhook endpoints (even if none are active)Monitor for scheduled workflowsThe ~0.5GB idle usage is actually pretty reasonable for a full-featured workflow automation platform.

Hey contourkde, thanks for your comment! I see, but then actually running n8n later with active workflows will be way more?

Well the only way to really figure it out is to give it a run.

Unfortunately n8n has alot going on so this cost doesnt sound entirely foreign to me.

Wish i had a little “oh yeah click <button> to reduce resources!” But unfortunately thats not the case.

For reference on hosting with N8N themselves, https://n8n.io/pricing/ It’ll cost around $24 monthly.
