Hello Railway team,
My trial has expired, and my service is offline. Its persistent volume is scheduled for deletion on 24 November 2026. No backups are available.
I need to download the existing volume data before deletion. The CLI refuses file access with:
“Service has no active deployment. Deploy or restart the service before using file commands.”
Is there a way to export the retained volume without a paid upgrade or restarting the application?
If staff assistance is required, please provide a secure channel for account verification and recovery. Please preserve the data while this request is being resolved.
I am not authorizing any charges, deployment, or data modification.
Thank you.

We're not able to provide read-only access or a separate export of a volume while the trial is expired and the service is offline, and the CLI file commands only work against a service with an active deployment.
The way to get the data back is to bring the workspace back into good standing, then pull the files yourself. That doesn't have to be a paid upgrade: you can switch to the Free plan from your workspace plans page, or subscribe to a paid plan from billing. Either way, the service needs to be deployed again before the volume can be read, and once it's running you can download the files with the CLI volume file commands or over SFTP.
There isn't a route to the volume that skips both the plan change and a deployment. Since you mentioned 24 November 2026 as the deletion date, the plan change and export need to happen before then.

Thank you. Before making changes, please have a human confirm:
- Can this expired-trial workspace switch to Free and restart the existing service with its existing volume without any payment or charges?
- Will switching preserve the existing volume and its contents?
- There are three pending project changes. Can we restart the previous deployment without applying those changes?
Please do not make changes or incur charges. I need a confirmed zero-cost recovery procedure.

I checked Workspace Settings → Plans → View Upgrade Options. Only Hobby ($5/month minimum) and Pro ($20/month minimum) are offered. There is no Free option.
Your automated response suggested switching to Free. Please provide the exact steps available for this expired-trial workspace, or have a human review an alternative way to recover the retained volume without charges.
The volume deletion date shown is 24 November 2026. Recovery is still unresolved.

The Free option isn't shown under View Upgrade Options. It's on the Plans page, below the Hobby and Pro cards, under "...or downgrade your workspace": click Downgrade to Free and confirm. Free costs $0/month and includes $1 of usage credit each month, and if usage goes past that credit the workloads stop until the next month. Your workspace has one member and you don't admin another Free workspace, so it meets the Free requirements.
Changing the plan does not restart anything by itself. You decide when to redeploy the service after switching. On Free, services run with App Sleeping and get 1 vCPU / 0.5 GB RAM.
The three pending changes stay staged until you apply them, so switching plans doesn't require applying them.
