Pricing is a Bit Confusing

What does "idle" mean? Does it refer to sleeping, or does it mean something else? If it's something else, how does the railway determine that it's idle? I'm a bit confused.

the “don’t pay for idle CPU and memory” is in comparison to buying a VPS or VM, where the resources are constantly allocated to your machine, meaning you’re constantly paying the full amount of CPU/RAM, even if it’s not in use

On Railway, you are only charged for the resources your app uses. The amount you are charged fluctuates as your app’s resource usage fluctuates

railway does what it can to optimize your costs, but it will ultimately listen to your app. If your app is incorrectly hogging 8GB of ram, you will be charged for that.

I prefer to keep my apps as lightweight and high-performing as possible, which is why I like Railway. However, its pricing feels a bit intimidating compared to AWS.

what you ment by railway does what it can to optimize your costs

They don’t allocate more mem/cpu than your app needs/asks for

if your app is allocating more than it should, then it’s very likely a code problem that needs to be sorted out, not a platform problem

That’s an observation we’ve been getting for years at this point. Unfortunately, once you start calculating costs by the minute as Railway does, the math gets complicated

The trial plan is very generous, it’s meant to let new users host their apps and get a feeling for cost before committing to paying for a full plan

I've been using Railway in my own testing project, so I'm familiar with it. I just wanted to confirm my understanding because I'm trying to encourage my team to adopt it.

Understood. If you’re using Railway in a corporate setting, the pro or enterprise plan is the way to go. Railway doesn’t have a committed spend option on any plan under Enterprise at the moment. you’re welcome to reach out to the team if you’re at all interested in the Enterprise plan

Sounds great! I'll make sure to communicate with the Railway team if we decide to move beyond testing and adopt Railway for full production. In any case, if the team adopts Railway, we'll use it in our testing and demo apps to gain a better understanding of the pricing and other aspects. Thanks for the insights!

Could you please clarify what the committed spend option means, if possible?

committing to spend $1,000+ per month on Railway, simple as that

oh ok

if you’re under that threshold, the pro plan is likely best for your team
