Railway SSH fails: "agent path temporarily unavailable" despite healthy deployment

Hello Railway Community!

I'm experiencing a persistent SSH access issue with my production service, even though the deployment is healthy and running normally.

Environment details:

  • Project: fulfilling-wisdom
  • Environment: production
  • Service: stratus-loyalty
  • Railway CLI: 5.71.0
  • Runtime: Railpack / Node.js 20.20.2
  • Deployment status: SUCCESS
  • Healthcheck: HTTP 200

Error message:

agent path temporarily unavailable

Troubleshooting already performed:

  • Railway CLI authentication: PASS
  • Correct project and environment: confirmed
  • DNS resolution for ssh.railway.com: PASS
  • TCP connectivity to ssh.railway.com:22: PASS
  • Service deployment: SUCCESS
  • Application healthcheck: HTTP 200
  • Application logs: normal startup, no runtime errors
  • Multiple SSH attempts: FAILED with the same error

The issue persists as of November 6, 2026.

Related community reports:

I found similar discussions describing this SSH issue:

  1. https://station.railway.com/questions/persistent-railway-ssh-error-the-agent-fa192365

  2. https://station.railway.com/questions/railway-ssh-fails-for-one-production-s-82b2b901

I also noticed that Railway previously reported SSH-related incidents and that a fix had been mentioned in the community. Unfortunately, SSH access is still unavailable for my service.

What I need help with:

I need to access my running container through Railway SSH to execute a private, read-only administrative verification against my existing PostgreSQL service.

The application itself is working correctly. I would prefer not to restart, redeploy, or modify the production service unnecessarily.

My questions:

  1. Is this a known issue with Railway's SSH agent or container routing?
  2. Is there a supported workaround to restore SSH access without restarting or redeploying?
  3. Are there any additional diagnostics I can perform to determine why the SSH agent path is unavailable?

Any guidance from the Railway team or community would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

We're sorry SSH is blocking your verification work. Your account is active and stratus-loyalty is online with a successful deployment, so the "agent path temporarily unavailable" failure comes from the connection between your computer or network and the service rather than from the service itself.

Troubleshooting your local computer or network environment for SSH, SCP or SFTP connections is outside the scope of Railway support, so we can't provide further diagnostics or a workaround for this connection.

Thank you for the response, but I don't believe this diagnosis is supported by the troubleshooting results.

I've already verified that:

  • DNS resolution for ssh.railway.com succeeds.
  • TCP connectivity to port 22 succeeds.
  • Railway CLI authentication succeeds.
  • The correct project, environment, and service are selected.
  • The production deployment is healthy and returns HTTP 200.
  • SSH consistently fails with "agent path temporarily unavailable".

This error is not a typical local SSH authentication or connectivity failure.

Additionally, Railway staff have previously acknowledged SSH routing issues affecting specific services, including cases where deployments remained healthy while SSH access failed.

Could a Railway team member please review this case rather than automatically attributing it to my local network?

Specifically, I would appreciate confirmation that the SSH agent and routing path for my service are available and functioning correctly.

If Railway has evidence that the issue is caused by my local environment, please share the specific diagnostic findings supporting that conclusion.

I'm not requesting support for configuring my local SSH client. I'm reporting a persistent failure of Railway's own railway ssh command.

Thank you.

You’re right to question our earlier response. The error is misleading, and we should not have attributed it to your local network.

“Agent path temporarily unavailable” can appear when the Railway CLI is authenticated but its authorization does not include the permissions needed to open an SSH connection. This may happen if the requested permissions were narrowed during the OAuth authorization step.

Railway SSH is working on our end. Please sign out of the CLI, sign in again, and grant the requested permissions in the authorization window before retrying railway ssh. You do not need to restart or redeploy your service.
