I am writing to request the unblocking of outbound SMTP egress traffic (specifically on ports 465 and 587) for a microservice running within our project.
Our account has a paid plan subscription, and outbound SMTP is already unblocked and working successfully in our Production environment. However, we recently transitioned our staging setup to a microservices architecture and deployed a new service named "identity-service" in our Staging environment.
This new service is currently unable to establish connection attempts to our mail server (smtp.gmail.com), failing instantly with the following socket error in the logs:--------------------------------------------------
OSError: [Errno 101] Network is unreachable
Traceback:
File "/usr/local/lib/python3.12/smtplib.py", line 341, in connect
self.sock = self._get_socket(host, port, self.timeout)File "/usr/local/lib/python3.12/socket.py", line 850, in create_connection
sock.connect(sa)Since the exact same code, SMTP host, and credentials work perfectly in our Production environment, we believe this is due to the default outbound SMTP egress block being applied to this newly deployed service/environment.
Could you please whitelist/unblock outbound SMTP traffic on ports 465 and 587 for the Staging environment/services in our project?
Here are our project details:
- Project Name: Natyashastra's Projects
- Project ID: focused-unity
- Target Service: identity-service (Staging Environment)
Can i know why emails aren't being sent in our production environment, which is on the Hobby plan? it was working fine earlier.

Your workspace is on the Hobby plan, which does not include outbound SMTP access. Outbound SMTP (ports 25, 465, 587) is only available on the Pro plan and above, and Hobby plans have SMTP disabled to prevent spam and abuse.
For sending emails from your application, please use a dedicated email service that provides HTTPS APIs. More information can be found in our documentation: Outbound Networking

My workspace automatically went to trial plan from hobby plan now. Why did this happen suddenly?

Your workspace is still on the Hobby plan, but it is in an unpaid state because a recent upgrade attempt to Pro generated a $13.51 invoice that failed to process due to a payment authentication error. You can resolve this by retrying the payment with a valid payment method from your workspace billing page, which will complete the Pro upgrade and unlock outbound SMTP access.

Why it is showing as trial plan currently? And why the invoice is charged from Mar 8 till Aug 23, when i have already paid the invoice till Aug 20. Is there a way i can connect with you over a google meet or phone call?

Your workspace shows as trial because the Pro upgrade payment failed authentication, and an unpaid subscription is treated as a trial until it clears. The Hobby subscription itself has not been cancelled.
The $13.51 is not a second charge for a period you already paid. It is the mid-cycle switch from Hobby to Pro: a $4.50 credit for your unused Hobby time and $18.01 for Pro through the rest of the current cycle, which ends September 20. Your July 20 to August 20 cycle was paid in full on August 20, so nothing overlaps.
Paying that invoice from your workspace billing page clears the unpaid state and completes the Pro upgrade, and re-saving your card there retries every open invoice immediately. Once you are on Pro, redeploy the services that send mail so the new outbound configuration applies; outbound SMTP is available on Pro and above.
Calls are not part of Hobby or Pro, so support runs through this thread.

Your workspace is still on the Hobby plan. It's displaying oddly because the Pro upgrade you attempted today created a $13.51 invoice that didn't go through, which leaves the workspace unpaid until it's settled.
That invoice covers 23 Aug to 20 Sep only, nothing earlier: it's the pro-rated cost of switching Hobby to Pro mid-cycle, $18.01 for the rest of the cycle minus a $4.50 credit for unused Hobby time. Your last regular invoice (Jul 20 to Aug 20) was paid on Aug 20, so nothing is charged twice. The payment failed at your bank's verification step, so retrying it from your billing page and completing that prompt will finish the upgrade.
On SMTP: outbound SMTP is available on Pro and above, and the block is applied per workspace plan, not per environment. Once Pro is active, redeploy the services that send mail (including the staging one) and connections to smtp.gmail.com will work. The "Network is unreachable" error is exactly what that plan-level block looks like.
We don't offer phone or video calls on the Hobby or Pro plans, but we're glad to keep helping here.

Hi thanks for the response. Yes i attempted to enable to PRO but don't want to proceed with PRO plan. Since my monthly usage is usually within 5$ which is accommodated by hobby plan. Last month and prev months, there were few unknowns and so our usage got shooted high. but for our project which is used by less than 200 users at this phase, we think hobby plan should suffice. For smtp, we will find out external api mechanisms as explained in the documentation. Hence can you revert it back to the same hobby plan subscription, which was not showing any pending invoice (before i attempted to pay)?

The $13.51 Pro upgrade invoice has been cleared and your workspace is back on the Hobby plan in good standing. No charge was taken for it.
For email sending on Hobby, you're on the right track with HTTPS-based email APIs. The docs page you saw covers the recommended services: https://docs.railway.com/reference/outbound-networking
