Version:

  • listmonk: v5.1.0

  • OS: Railway one-click deploy

Description of the bug

Ever since I've upgraded to the latest listmonk instance, my SMTP hasn't been working...

The double opt-in emails haven't been sending, the campaign tests don't work, and the SMTP tests don't work. I've tried with several SMTP providers which work otherwise and that I've been using for the last few years. I've tried the following (digits have been changed to zeros):

Mailersend (port 587):
dial tcp 00.000.00.000:000: i/o timeout

Sendpulse (587):
dial tcp 0.00.000.000:000: i/o timeout

Mailgun (465):
dial tcp 00.000.00.000:000: i/o timeout

Brevo (587):
dial tcp 0.000.000.0:000: i/o timeout

The Listmonk dev has said:

> This seems like something to do with the Railway environment. The error clearly says that it's a DNS resolution timeout, hmm. Could you please try reaching out to Railway, or if it permits, SSH'ing into the instance and trying to do a traceroute to the SMTP endpoints?

SMTP has been completely disabled on Hobby plan. Please upgrade to PRO or higher.

Unfortunately, I can't find any info about this on Google or the pricing page: https://railway.com/pricing

Could you point me to where you found this info?

You can use something like Resend to continue sending emails from the Hobby plan.

Thanks for the heads-up and link. I don't think Listmonk supports email APIs like Resend at the moment, and switching to a more expensive plan would put my current setup at the same cost as other hosted newsletter options. Looks like I'll have to switch to another service...

I've got the same issue. Everything was working well before. Why did you guys block SMTP for the hobby plan? As "candide" says, Listmonk does not support API-keys at this moment. I can imagine a lot of people do can't send e-mails now..

Exactly! It's an absolute shame that they moved an existing featured behind a higher tier and did it without alerting users ahead of time or indicating it in their pricing tiers (at the time of the change). I'm looking to move my Listmonk deployment to Pikapods or self-hosting. This also makes Railway non-viable for other projects that use SMTP ports for alerts and notifications. 20 USD for my low volume newsletter is overkill, especially when my sending volume would fall under the free tier of most mass email platforms.

Indeed. Disabling must-have dev functions like SMTP for paying customers is a no-go for me. I'm moving somewhere else. I really liked Railway, but it's going downwards lately in my option.
