Title: Railway deployment cannot connect to MongoDB Atlas — need help diagnosing outbound connection
Hello Railway Support,
I'm having trouble getting my REDEYEBATT Movie Studio backend to connect to my MongoDB Atlas database.
My Railway service is:
- Service:
stephenbatt-REDEYEBATT-MOVIE-STUDIO - Deployment ID:
554a5f40 - Region: US West
- Deployment date: November 6, 2026
- Status: Active
The Node.js application starts successfully and listens on port 8080. However, the MongoDB connection fails.
Here is the relevant deployment log:
[api] redeyebatt-studio-api listening on :8080 (development)
[db] not connected: Could not connect to any servers
in your MongoDB Atlas cluster. One common reason is
that you're trying to access the database from an IP
that isn't whitelisted.
[config] database=configured auth=unconfigured
storage=unconfigured rendering=unconfigured
adapters=none_implementedI have already checked MongoDB Atlas Network Access. The following rule is active:
0.0.0.0/0 — ActiveThis was added specifically for the Railway backend. Therefore, I would like help determining why the Railway deployment still cannot establish a connection to Atlas.
Could you help me investigate these specific questions?
- Can the Railway service in the US West region establish outbound connections to MongoDB Atlas?
- Is there a DNS or DNS SRV resolution problem affecting the MongoDB connection string?
- Is there any Railway networking, egress, firewall, or platform issue that could prevent this service from reaching Atlas?
- Can you recommend a way to obtain the underlying connection error rather than the generic MongoDB server-selection failure?
I am not asking you to debug the entire application. I want to establish whether the failure is related to Railway's network or deployment environment, or whether I should concentrate on the application's MongoDB configuration.
I have spent considerable time troubleshooting this and would appreciate a clear diagnosis and the next specific step.
Thank you.

Additional information — possible connection to current Railway networking incident
I noticed Railway has an active incident titled "External network blocks affecting access to Railway," affecting public networking in US West and other regions.
My Movie Studio service is deployed in US West.
Could this incident be related to my MongoDB Atlas connection failure?
I understand the published incident primarily describes external networks blocking Railway IP addresses. However, since my service is unable to establish a connection to Atlas, could a Railway engineer verify whether this incident or any related networking restrictions could be affecting outbound connections from my deployment?
I would appreciate confirmation either way so we can rule this out rather than continue troubleshooting blindly.

The next useful step is to expose the underlying server-selection error; the allowlist hint alone does not identify the cause or link it to the incident.
If this is Mongoose, add this inside your existing connection catch(err) handler in the Railway service:
console.error({ name: err.name, code: err.code });
console.error([...(err.reason?.servers?.values() ?? [])].map((s, i) => ({
server: i + 1,
type: s.type,
error: s.error?.name,
code: s.error?.code,
cause: s.error?.cause?.code
})));This deliberately omits the URI, credentials, hostnames and full error messages. Mongoose documents reason.servers here: https://mongoosejs.com/docs/connections.html#server-selection . If the codes are absent, inspect each server's error.message privately and share only a manually redacted version. Please include your Mongoose/MongoDB driver version; if you use the native driver, say so.
DNS errors, connection timeouts and authentication errors require different fixes. These details would let us choose the next check instead of guessing. I cannot confirm or rule out a Railway infrastructure incident from the posted log.
AI-assisted; documentation checked and extraction logic tested with synthetic errors, not against your deployment.
